National Conference Activist Killed By Militants in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 30 – A prominent activist of Jammu and Kashmir’s ruling National Conference was shot dead by separatist militants in his village late Wednesday evening, police said.

A senior police officer said the guerrillas fired at Mohammad Maqbool Para, block president of the National Conference, who was watching a cricket match on TV along with his family members in his house in Vijpara village, 36 km from here in Bandipore district of north Kashmir.

‘The militants barged into his home and opened fire at Para, who was immediately shifted to hospital where he succumbed,’ the officer told IANS.

He said police and paramilitary reinforcements had rushed to the area for searches.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the killing – the first attack on a mainstream political worker in Kashmir this year.
