Gibb Defends World War Ii Memorial
BEE GEES star ROBIN GIBB has defended plans for a London memorial to British bomber crews after a top German politician declared the tribute insensitive.
The singer wants to honour the airmen who gave their lives in World War II with a statue in the British capital’s Green Park to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
But the mayor of Dresden, one of the German cities which was ravaged by bombs in 1945, has refused to endorse the construction.
Mayor Helma Orosz has been quoted as saying: “A memorial like the one which is planned in London would not be part of the culture of reconciliation. The emotions of the people in Dresden are running high. It is against our culture of remembrance.”
But Gibb insists the memorial is not intended to celebrate the destruction of German cities during the war.
He says, “It’s not our aim to commemorate the bombing of any city including Dresden. Our aim is to commemorate the loss of 55,573 young volunteer airmen who gave their lives in the theatre of operation known as the air war over Europe between 1939 and 1945.”
