Earthquake Hits Japan

Tokyo, March 14 – An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted northeastern Japan Sunday, authorities said.

The quake occurred at 5.08 p.m. and was located some 40 km under the sea east of Fukushima Prefecture, the Japan meteorological agency said.

Xinhua news agency reported that the seismic waves spread to neighbouring Miyagi, Tochigi, Iwate, Aomori and Akita Prefectures. Tremors were also felt in buildings in Tokyo.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The quake occurred a day after another temblor of 5.7 magnitude shook the same region.
